JOB SUMMARY

Under the guidance of the assigned, assists the teacher and students with assigned cultural activities and implementation of cultural curriculum.

MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Assists in implementing cultural activities, including but not limited to song, dance, regalia making, beadwork, drum making and weaving instruction designed to meet individual student needs and whole groups that may include at risk or special needs youth.
  2. Helps to gather and prepare cultural arts and educational materials for use in instruction and activities.
  3. Helps students to develop skills, including but not limited to beadwork, weaving, and dance specific to indigenous processes.
  4. Assists students in learning about indigenous processes including collection processes, procedures and practices.
  5. Uses positive reinforcement strategies and other appropriate techniques to motivate students and encourage achievement.
  6. Assists in maintaining an orderly, attractive, and positive learning environment.
  7. May perform routine clerical tasks as needed.
  8. Attends or participates in required staff meetings and other activities deemed necessary.
  9. Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.

EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION

Required:  High School diploma or GED equivalent and one (1) year of experience performing Tribal cultural activities and application of indigenous processes, that includes at least six (6) months experience working with school age children.

SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION

Skilled in: Using necessary equipment, computers, machinery, tools or software, including safe handling of scissors, needles, awls, chisels, saws, sewing machines and knives; working with students in a positive and confident manner; demonstrating techniques; reading, writing and oral communications.

 

Knowledge of: Cultural plants used in manufacture of native utilitarian items, indigenous collection processes and practices, history, stories, songs, and dances used by cultural groups, design and constructions of cultural items, preparation of raw materials; Muckleshoot history, culture, and arts.

 

Ability to: Follow verbal and written instructions; work with students in a positive and confident manner; observe safe work practices; establish and maintain cooperative work relationships; arrive to work in a timely manner; attend required training; maintain confidentiality; assist in preparation and implementation of relevant cultural activities and curriculum; be flexible and adapt to change in work environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this class. 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to have manual and finger dexterity for operation of personal computer and routine paperwork; sit, talk, see, or hear; remain still in designing and implementing cultural activities.  The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, balance, bend at the waist, crouch, kneel, twist, use foot controls, and operate a motor vehicle; lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
