JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, drives a transit bus or van to safely transport passengers.

MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Drive a transit bus or van over assigned routes within an established time schedule.
  2. Load and unload passengers safely at designated stops; ensure passenger safety in crossing the street.
  3. Maintain control of passengers on vehicle; responds to citizens concerning transportation schedules and problems.
  4. Operate transit bus in a safe and efficient manner. Responsible for the safety and well-being of him/herself, their passenger(s), and all other people on the road.
  5. Inspect vehicle prior to trips to ensure safe operation; report any mechanical defects or malfunctions; refuel vehicle, check and maintain fluid levels.
  6. Sweep and maintain vehicles in clean and orderly condition.
  7. Complete transportation records such as number of passengers transported, mileage, special runs, route directions, etc.
  8. Ensure recordkeeping and adhere to the oral and written Transit policy and procedures.
  9. May transport passengers with special learning needs and physical challenges; may operate power lifts to load and unload passengers in wheelchairs; may strap and tie down wheelchairs to ensure safety.
  10. Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.

EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current and valid Washington State driver’s license.

 

 

Special Requirements:

  • Incumbents must pass a criminal background check, a drug screen and meet all health and immunization requirements required by federal, state or Tribal laws and regulations.
  • A first aid/CPR and blood borne pathogen certification may be required for some positions at time of appointment or at a time set by the Tribe.

SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION

Knowledge of:

  • Safe driving practices and techniques.
  • Positive methods to maintain control of passenger behavior.
  • Basic first aid.
  • Safety and maintenance requirements of bus/van and other transportation equipment.
  • Provisions of the Washington Motor Vehicle Code applicable to the operation of vehicle.

 

Skilled in:

  • Driving a bus/van and other transportation equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Maintaining control of passenger’s behavior on a bus or other vehicle.
  • Operating equipment such as power lifts, when required.
  • Decision making.
  • MS Office skills including Word and Excel are required.
  • Record keeping.
  • Oral and written communications.

 

Ability to:  

  • Operate efficiently and adhere to a strict timetable.
  • Respond to an emergency situation.
  • Not be easily distracted or grow frustrated if traffic or mechanical problems cause delays.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this class.

 

Work is performed in the field, operating the transit bus, regardless of weather conditions. The driver is exposed to noise, fumes, and various road conditions. The employee is frequently required to sit and drive, talk, see and hear. They are occasionally required to walk; use hands to operate, finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus                 

                    

Licenses or Certifications Required
