JOB SUMMARY

Under immediate supervision, the Fitness Trainer 1 will get on-the-job training and assist with developing and implementing exercise and recreation programs for individuals and groups of all ages, while working towards certifications. This position requires excellent attendance and is performance based. The Wellness Center is a business with extended hours and days of operation. We have flex scheduling that is based off of excellent attendance, seniority, and performance.

 

This is the first level within a three level series and is distinguished from the Fitness Trainer 2 in that incumbents generally are working towards certification and typically work with and under the guidance of another worker.  Must complete the following while in the first level Fitness Trainer:

  • Agree to and sign and education agreement
  • Become NASM certified, Lifeguard certified, CPR/First-Aid certified in 6-12 months from hire
  • Shadow a certified Fitness/Personal Trainer, learning all facets of Fitness Trainer position.
  • Train to occasionally work in Paddles Up Café.

MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Begins NASM online Personal Trainer Certification classes. The level one Trainer has 6 months to 12 months to pass their NASM certification program. An education agreement is signed outlining the Tribes expectations of the participant.
  2. Shadows a certified Trainer, learning how to perform fitness assessments and prescribe exercise programs for individuals of various ages and fitness levels, with an emphasis on improving quality of life.
  3. Works with a certified Fitness/Personal Trainer, learning how to develop and implement exercise programs with individuals and groups.
  4. Learns how to orient new participants to the wellness facility and instructs participants on proper use of all fitness and recreation equipment.
  5. Shadows a certified Fitness/Personal Trainer, learning how to instruct group exercise programs or educational classes for participants of all ages that focus on improving quality of life in healthy, fun, and safe manner.
  6. Learns how to develop and implement member incentive and retention programs, and document results of such efforts.
  7. Is trained on cleaning, lubricating, and maintaining all fitness equipment according to manufacturer’s standards and department policy.
  8. Learns how to ensure all fitness, court, and common areas meet health, safety, and cleanliness guidelines. Complete all duties of daily cleaning schedules and opening/closing procedures.
  9. Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.

EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION

Required: High School diploma or GED. Must sign an education agreement to become NASM, CPR/First Aid, Lifeguard certified within 6-12 months of hire; must have a valid/current Food Handlers permit.

SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION: Ability to learn fitness program and complete required certifications; customer service skills; communication skills; ability to maintain confidentiality and learn about HIPAA laws and regulations; team player; cultural competency/sensitivity; basic computer skills; ability to work with groups and complete presentations in group setting; ability to work flexible schedule; ability to maintain regular attendance.  

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Frequently sit, stand, walk, run, jump; Occasionally lift and carry up to 45 lbs.; Frequently climb, bend, twist, reach and grasp; Occasionally balance, crouch and kneel; Frequently push/pull up to 40 lbs. and use fingers; Frequently or continuously talk, hear, and see.
