Under general supervision, drives a school bus or van to safely transport students to and from school, authorized activities and field trips.
1. Drives a school bus or van over assigned routes within an established time schedule; drives students to and from school and special event trips.
2. Loads and unloads students safely at designated stops and on field trips; ensures student safety in crossing the street.
3. Maintains control of students on vehicle; responds to parents and other citizens concerning transportation schedules and problems.
4. Inspects vehicle prior to trips to ensure safe operation; reports any mechanical defects or malfunctions; refuels vehicles, checks and maintains fluid levels.
5. Sweeps and maintains vehicles in clean and orderly condition.
6. Completes transportation records such as number of students transported, mileage, special runs, route directions, etc.
7. May transport children with special learning needs and physical challenges; may operate power lifts to load and unload students in wheelchairs; may strap and tie down wheelchairs to ensure student safety.
Class B Commercial Driver’s license with specific endorsements/restrictions is required.
Special Requirements Incumbents must pass a criminal background check, a drug screen and meet all health and immunization requirements required by federal, state or Tribal laws and regulations. A first aid/CPR certification may be required for some positions at time of appointment or at a time set by the Tribe.
Knowledge of: Safe driving practices and techniques. Positive methods to maintain control of student behavior. Basic first aid. Safety and maintenance requirements of bus/van and other transportation equipment. Provisions of the Washington Motor Vehicle Code applicable to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of school children.
Skill in: Driving a school bus/van and other transportation equipment safely and efficiently. Maintaining control of student behavior on a bus or other vehicle. Operating equipment such as power lifts, when required. Record keeping. Oral and written communications.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and drive, talk, see and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; use hands to operate, finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.
