JOB SUMMARY

The Culture Program Shop Technician supports the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe’s cultural carving and fabrication efforts by maintaining and repairing tools, equipment, and machinery in the Culture Department’s carving shed. This position ensures that all shop machinery, including band saws, sanders, fans, and other handheld tools, are in safe and operable condition. The technician fabricates and modifies tools and equipment to meet the needs of cultural programming. They are responsible for organizing and maintaining shop inventory, handling hazardous materials, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. The role requires independent troubleshooting and technical decision-making, as well as collaboration with cultural staff and community members. This position plays a key role in supporting cultural preservation and education by enabling efficient and safe operations of the shop environment.

MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Perform regular maintenance and repairs on boats and canoes.
  2. Conduct routine checks and servicing of band saws, sanders, and shop fans.
  3. Repair and maintain handheld shop tools to ensure safe usage.
  4. Organize and track tools, equipment, and consumables.
  5. Weld and fabricate custom tools and components.
  6. Modify existing equipment to meet specialized carving needs.
  7. Dispose of hazardous materials in accordance with regulations.
  8. Maintain proper storage and labeling of hazardous items.
  9. Track inventory levels and order needed parts or supplies.
  10. Collaborate with cultural staff to develop custom tool designs.
  11. Clean and maintain workshop areas to ensure safety.
  12. Diagnose and resolve mechanical issues quickly and effectively.
  13. Assist in transportation and storage of vessels and trailers.
  14. Ensure all machines meet operational safety standards.
  15. Support carving shed staff with technical problem-solving.
  16. Because of the Tribe's commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.

EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required, preferably with vocational or technical training in mechanics or industrial arts.
  • Three (3) years of experience in machinery maintenance, welding, or fabrication.
  • Building Maintenance Engineer Certificate

Preferred:

  • One year of experience working in a cultural, tribal, or educational shop setting.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires frequent standing, walking, and manual handling of tools and equipment. The technician must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly, including moving large or awkward machinery components. Duties often involve bending, crouching, and reaching in tight or overhead spaces while making repairs. Work is performed primarily in a shop environment, which may be loud and involve exposure to dust, fumes, and vibration. Personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety glasses, and hearing protection must be worn as needed. Occasional outdoor work may be required for vessel maintenance. Tasks may require fine motor coordination and visual inspection of machine components. The technician must be able to safely operate tools and equipment for extended periods of time.
