JOB SUMMARY

Under supervision, performs paraprofessional-level health care duties in the Tribe’s Health Clinic.

MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Obtains laboratory specimens, processes and prepares for transport. Ability to perform venous and capillary blood withdrawal.
  1. Demonstrates ability to screen patient phone calls; refers and responds appropriately. Identifies patients' needs, schedules patient appointments as appropriate and refers patients to health care professional, when necessary. Determines urgency and prioritizes according to clinical guidelines.
  1. Collects and records measurements and vital signs; interviews patients for medical, dietary and social history, including health risk factors.
  1. Screens patients for health care services and assists providers with procedures, treatments, and minor surgeries and all aspects of care.
  1. Provides basic health and nutrition information to patients as well as referrals to health care services and available resources.
  1. Cleans, stocks and sets up patient examination rooms and sterilizes examination equipment.
  1. Orders, inventories, monitors and maintains clinical and laboratory supplies.
  1. Maintains documents and processes medical records.
  1. Collects and maintains laboratory records and data for research studies and program management.
  1. Administers medications in a safe and knowledgeable manner following appropriate policies/procedures.
  1. Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge, skill, and judgment within area of specialty.
  1. Practices within parameters of license and demonstrates accountability of own professional conduct.
  1. Assists providers in all aspects of patient care as needed.
  1. Maintain the privacy and confidentiality of all protected health information in accordance with the Division’s Policies and Procedures, and in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  1. Ability to operate MIT HWC radiology equipment and software. Able to perform general positioning, x-ray and processing.

Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.

EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION

Required:

  • Current Washington State Certification as a Medical Assistant (MA-C) is required.
  • Five (5) years’ experience as a Medical Assistant Certified (MA-C) in primary care, family medicine and/or pediatrics.
  • CPR/AED Certified (BLS for HCP).
  • X-ray Technician registration through Washington State with current experience in full body X-rays.
  • Seven (7) years’ experience as a certified Medical Assistant may be considered in lieu of X-ray technician registration.

SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION

Knowledge of:

  • Basic Pharmacology
  • Medical terminology and clinical procedures
  • Human systems, including basic anatomy, physiology, biology, human growth and development
  • CDC, OSHA, and medical safety standards
  • Behaviors and practices to achieve and maintain good health
  • Health care maintenance and prevention, and universal precautions
  • Medical record-keeping procedures

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this class.

 

Work is performed mostly in a clinic setting. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously required to talk, see and hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit, walk, bend, balance, crouch, kneel, reach and twist; and frequently use both hands to finger, handle, or feel objects and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift, move, push/pull and/or carry up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and far acuity and the ability to adjust focus. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.                       

               

Licenses or Certifications Required

Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program with current license in State of Washington and five (5) years’ experience in primary care, family medicine and/or pediatrics. X-ray Technician registration through Washington State with current experience in full body X-rays. Must be CPR certified.
