JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, provides early intervention evaluation and treatment services for young children in assigned Tribal programs.

MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Screens and evaluates child’s level of motor development, including fine/gross motor, sensory-motor and functional motor skills (activities of daily living).
  2. Determines presence or absence of delay in motor development or development of appropriate skill in activities of daily living.
  3. Determines need for occupational therapy to address and remedy the motor delay. Designs and implements intervention program and evaluates child’s progress.
  4. Consults with other members of team to select activity program consistent with needs and capabilities of child and to coordinate occupational therapy with other therapeutic activities.
  5. Quantifies the level and type of services required and determines developmentally appropriate goals.
  6. When appropriate, provides occupational therapy intervention services to child and family as direct services, indirect services, and/or consultative, in the child’s natural environment.
  7. Establishes IFSP/IEP goal/objectives for each child needing treatment and meets with family during MDT meeting to formulate those objectives.
  8. Re-assesses each child’s performance at least yearly and progress quarterly. Participates in team meetings with family to review progress.
  9. Advises and demonstrates to other staff the methods of proper positioning and techniques to benefit the development of each child receiving therapy.
  10. Monitors the progress of motor skills and consults with staff regarding children not receiving direct therapy.
  11. Provides instruction to parents and remains available for frequent information discussions with parents regarding therapy methods.
  12. Maintains confidential, accurate and updated records.
  13. Provides clinical direction to Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTA).
  14. Provides training to Supports Services staff, and others as appropriate, in carrying out day-to-day activities designed to enhance the student’s physical, motor and sensory functioning.
  15. Coordinates the delivery of occupational therapy services with classroom teachers, special education staff and other providers to ensure continuity and consistency in providing comprehensive special education services to students.
  16. Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.

EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION

Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited college or university; current Washington State Professional Occupational Therapy License; current or pending Educational Staff Associates (ESA) certificate; and two (2) years experience working with developmentally delayed infants and children.

 

Special Requirements: A valid Washington State driver’s license is required at the time of appointment or at a time set by the Tribe.  Incumbents must pass a criminal background check, a drug screen and meet all health and immunizations requirements required by federal, state or Tribal laws and regulations.  A valid First Aid/CPR card required at the time of appointment or within three months of hire.

SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION

Knowledge of: Young children’s motor development stages; Basic occupational therapy methods and techniques; Individual remedial program development techniques; Developmentally delayed infants and children; State and Federal guidelines for eligibility and treatment of motor delays.

 

Skilled in: Early childhood motor development assessment and evaluation; Motor development monitoring and progress assessment; Occupational therapy intervention skills; Identifying and developing individualized activity programs; Working with family and staff in a team approach ; Oral and written communication; Understanding and completing oral and written directions with minimal supervision; Establishing and maintaining effective organizational, public and community relationships

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this class.  

 

Regularly required to sit, stand, and walk; talk and hear; reach with hand and arms and/or grasp with fingers; bend, kneel, or stoop; use hands to operate, finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; lifts and/or moves up to 60 lbs.. Continuously uses vision. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.
