Under general supervision, teaches and instructs children of varying abilities, including those with special needs, disabilities, or delays in academic, social, behavioral, and other educational skill areas; counsels, disciplines, and supervises to meet the individual needs of assigned students based on adopted guidelines and the rules and regulations governing early childhood special education and/or early intervention services; evaluates student performance and progress and makes necessary referrals to other early intervention/special education personnel.
Required: Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or related field, from an accredited college or university. A minimum of two (2) years early childhood special education teaching experience with children ages birth to six years of age with emphasis in learning disabilities, behavior management, and inclusive teaching; must have knowledge of child development, sensory integration, strong parent communication skills, and be a collaborative team member.
Special Requirements: Must pass a criminal background check, a drug screen and meet all health and immunization requirements. Must be able to obtain satisfactory results on a pre-employment physical examination, including tuberculosis screening.
Skilled In: Designing and implementing lesson plans for students having a wide range of achievement; adapting curricula and programs to meet the intellectual, social, physical, and emotional needs of special education students; effective communication with students, parents, or guardians, staff and administrators; working with children in an understanding, patient, receptive and confident manner; organizing activities in keeping with the maturity and attention span of assigned students; following written and oral instructions; managing student behavior; using standard office equipment, including personal computer.
Knowledge of: Concepts of child development and developmental behavior characteristics; effective behavior management techniques; rules and procedures for child/student safety; non-visual instruction techniques; non-aural, non-verbal communication techniques; rules and regulations governing special education.
Ability to: Communicate effectively; work with students in a positive and confident manner; observe safe work practices; establish and maintain cooperative work relationships; arrive to work in a timely manner; attend required training; maintain confidentiality; adapt and be flexible to changing work priorities; work with constant interruptions; utilizing a variety of equipment used in the care and handling of students with severe disabilities; prepare and maintain accurate records.
