  • JOB SUMMARY

    Under general supervision, drives a transit bus or van to safely transport passengers.

    MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Drives a transit bus or van over assigned routes within an established time schedule.
    2. Loads and unloads passengers safely at designated stops; ensures passenger safety in crossing the street.
    3. Maintains control of passengers on vehicle; responds to parents and other citizens concerning transportation schedules and problems.
    4. Inspects vehicle prior to trips to ensure safe operation; reports any mechanical defects or malfunctions; refuels vehicles, checks and maintains fluid levels.
    5. Sweeps and maintains vehicles in clean and orderly condition.
    6. Completes transportation records such as number of passengers transported, mileage, special runs, route directions, etc.
    7. Ensures record keeping and adheres to the oral and written transportation policy and procedures.
    8. May transport passengers with special learning needs and physical challenges; may operate power lifts to load and unload passengers in wheelchairs; may strap and tie down wheelchairs to ensure student safety.
    9. Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.

    EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION

    Class B Commercial Driver’s license with specific endorsements/restrictions is required. Special Requirements Incumbents must pass a criminal background check, a drug screen and meet all health and immunization requirements required by federal, state or Tribal laws and regulations. A first aid/CPR and blood borne pathogen certification may be required for some positions at time of appointment or at a time set by the Tribe.

    SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION

    Knowledge of: Safe driving practices and techniques. Positive methods to maintain control of student behavior. Basic first aid. Safety and maintenance requirements of bus/van and other transportation equipment. Provisions of the Washington Motor Vehicle Code applicable to the operation of vehicle.

    Skill in: Driving a bus/van and other transportation equipment safely and efficiently. Maintaining control of passenger’s behavior on a bus or other vehicle. Operating equipment such as power lifts, when required. MS Office skills including Work and Excel are required. Record keeping. Oral and written communications.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    The working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this class. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and drive, talk, see and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; use hands to operate, finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.
