JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision of a Physician, provides mid-level medical care and services in a family practice environment with an emphasis on chronic disease management and prevention.

MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Provides professional medical screening, evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of health problems to include children, adults, geriatrics and women’s health. Functions as a primary health care provider to all patients seeking services at the Muckleshoot Health and Wellness Center.
  2. Consults with other medial and clinical staff in coordinating health care services for Muckleshoot Indian Tribe (MIT) patients. Works in collaboration with and receives direction from the Lead Clinic Physician
  3. Coordinates referral services to outside providers when appropriate. Builds professional relationships with other practitioners and medical facilities to coordinate care of MIT patients.
  4. Accurately and thoroughly completes documentation of patient visit in the electronic health record within appropriate time frame.
  5. Assists with the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
  6. Participates in ongoing safety and quality assurance oversight within the clinic setting. Assists in the compilation of data and offers input to ensure safe working environment and provides input for standards of care.
  7. Attends regular staff meetings and prepares agenda items as appropriate. Supports ongoing staff and medical education process and offers clinical education to staff.
  8. Provides technical supervision to medical assistants as it relates to patient care.
  9. Maintains current licensure and certifications pertinent to position. Practices within scope of licensure and seeks consultation with medical provider when appropriate. Prescribes medications under authority of supervising physician.
  10. Maintain the privacy and confidentiality of all protected health information in accordance with the Division’s Policies and Procedures, and in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  11. Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities, and may include driving.

EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION

Graduation from accredited Physician Assistant program and three to five (3-5) years PA experience in primary care or family medicine required. Previous experience in a tribal health care environment preferred.

SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION

Knowledge: Chronic disease to include diabetes, HTN, CVD asthma, etc. Ability to evaluate and treat patients with several diagnoses and medications. Pediatrics – demonstrated ability in treating childhood illness, ability to assess/treat asthma, URI, otitis, etc. Knowledge of vaccines, immunizations and physical requirements. HIPAA and other applicable laws/regulations with regard to protected health information.

 

Skills: Clinical skills – hands on ability to evaluate and treat symptoms and disease processes presented in a family practice environment, competent in all areas of practice; assessment skills – strong ability to observe and obtain subjective data, make proper assessment and develop plan; patient teaching skills – ability to instruct patients using appropriate adult/child-learning models; excellent and accurate verbal communication with patients and other staff in person and via phone; time management and organizational skills – ability to prioritize several tasks concurrently, and discern which require immediate attention while remaining calm and professional, delegates appropriately; problem solving and decision-making, fact finding, researching, problem prioritizing, developing plan and evaluating effectiveness; resourcefulness and enlisting support; strong written communication and documentation skills with legibility, accuracy, thoroughness of charting, note taking, requisitions, etc; teamwork – demonstrates ability to work with other providers, medical support staff, and front office staff in a professional and collaborative manner. Must be able to competently and efficiently utilize our electronic health record system.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is performed mostly in a clinic setting. Continuously uses vision and listens. Frequently sits, stands, and/or talks. Requires manual dexterity for computer work and routine paperwork. Occasionally walks, climbs stairs, bends at the waist, drives, and/or reaches with hands and arms. Occasionally lifts and/or carries up to 50 lbs. Occasionally pushes or pulls up to 250 lbs. May occasionally be exposed to moving mechanical parts and/or biohazardous waste materials.

Licenses or Certifications Required

Washington State license as a Physician Assistant, certification as a PA by the National Commission on Certification of PAs, current CPR and BLS certifications and valid Washington State driver’s license required at the time of appointment or at a time set by the Tribe.
